The Mens 2s made it difficult for themselves this week, with an overly optimistic meet time and various late players meaning the match started with Phoenix having just 9 players on the pitch. Nevertheless the 9 men held out until the others arrived, but the situation then got worse.
Phoenix were missing a number of experienced players and had fielded a good number of juniors, but they were facing an experienced Harrow team that had played in the 1st team leagues in the previous season. Harrow showed no quarter and were full-blooded in every tackle, quickly taking full advantage of the fact that the umpires were intent on the ball and not the means by which it was reached. Phoenix had no answer to this and were effectively bullied out of the game after the first exchange of goals, with Martin Davis netting after a good team move.
There were incidents galore and controversial goals, but Phoenix weren’t really in the match and it was 6-1 to Harrow by the final whistle.
