Phoenix & Ranelagh hockey club was formed in 1998 following the merger of two local clubs.
Phoenix, established by players from the old Huntley and Palmers team in 1984, was based at the Prudential Ibis sports ground, and offered ladies, mens, and mixed hockey. Ranelagh, based just a few minutes away at Rivermead Leisure Centre, was established in 1928, and ran a thriving junior (girls and boys) section.
Phoenix & Ranelagh continue to be based at the Prudential Ibis club, and use the facilities for hot showers and hot teas after home games, as well as various social functions throughout the season. Club members are also entitled to use the other sporting facilities Ibis has to offer.

Summer Hockey Eligibility
Summer hockey can be an important pre season team building activity or simply a way to keep kit over the summer months. Either way it is important to establish who is and therefore is not eligible to represent Phoenix & Ranelagh Hockey Club. Summer hockey whether men or ladies is usually managed through a league structure and as such it is important that Phoenix & Ranelagh Hockey Club is represented by eligible members of the club and those who are not members are only considered under special circumstances.
Eligibility
- A member of the Phoenix & Ranelagh Hockey Club. Membership is annual and therefore a player through the winter season is considered a member for the Summer season.
Special Circumstances
- Old players who have expressed an interest in returning for the coming Winter season. Judgement needs to be made into whether they are likely to return for the Winter season as there are no guarantees.
- New players to the club who have expressed an interest in playing for the club in the Winter season. Judgement needs to be made into whether they are likely to return for the Winter season as there are no guarantees.
Considerations
As described previously all Winter club members are eligible to play however consideration should be made if you know an individual player is leaving the area, changing clubs or going to university etc. They are eligible to play however other players may be more appropriate (as they will still be within the club next season) and should take priority.
